The material of sun screening

Currently, we see that as blinds, there are mainly four types of materials available on the market: aluminium, steel, glass and wood. Below are the different properties for each product type.

Sun screening

Aluminium blinds

Aluminium is generally the most commonly used, especially in the form of horizontal blinds or as expanded metal. This is due to the light weight of the material. In addition, it is relatively easy and cheap to produce. We too use aluminium in our various types of expanded metal. Aluminium also offers advantages over steel in terms of service life; in combination with powder coating, it provides a long-term and relatively maintenance-free solution.

Steel blinds

Steel blinds or slats are less common as shading. However, this material can provide the building with sturdy blinds that also look very sleek and stylish. Steel has a high own weight, which requires a heavier substructure on the wall. The blinds can be positioned so that at a certain angle, no sunlight shines directly in.

Glass blinds

Glass as a blinds material is the least used, but it is often used when transparency or translucent is desired. Like steel, glass is relatively heavy, which has many implications for implementation and control. Also, glass is quite fragile, so less suitable if you are looking for good burglar resistance.

Wooden blinds

Finally, wood has recently been increasingly used in sun screening. Like steel, it gives an extra architectural boost to your building. However, it is difficult to combine with high-tech solutions, limiting your ability to control these blinds.

More about our steel shading solutions

Now that you know what the most commonly used materials are as shading, we would like to take a closer look at the options we have at Staco to provide you with the sun screening that suit your challenge. At Staco, we use two types of material for our shading panels; namely steel and aluminium. In the case of steel, full pressed and louvre panels and gratings are the most common option. In the case of aluminium, it is expanded metal.

Pressed Full gratings

Steel pressed full gratings are visually very uniform and give many design options. Dimensions can be played with to ensure that the sun gets in more or less. But the color is also entirely up to you, with the option of powder-coating the full pressed panels and gratings. This gives the building a unique look.

Pressed Louvre gratings

Steel pressed louvre gratings are another solution that is very popular when you want to go for steel blinds. With louvre gratings, there is the choice of placing the slat bars at a 30º, 45º or 60º angle. Thus, the degree of light transmission can be determined. Like the full pressed panels and gratings, these give many design options, as there is also a lot of variation in the height of the bearing bars and the mesh widths of the panels. This also determines the degree of shading and privacy.

Expanded metal

Aluminium sun screening are currently a very popular solution. The material is light, strong and it has optimal freedom of form. Due to the lighter material, less heavy and strong construction is needed to attach these blinds to the building. Full pressed and louvre panels and gratings can also be produced in aluminium. Another option is to use the attractive-looking expanded metal as sun screening. Many different shapes, sizes and even fixing methods are possible. Choose the structure that suits the project and go for a very open or rather closed option to limit transparency from a particular line of sight. Due to the many types of shapes of expanded metal, this material suits both a sleek building that requires straight lines and a design that calls for playful elements.
