But metal doesn’t burn, right?

Staco is about to test its metal panels for flame-retardant properties.

Our power grid is under pressure. With the growing demand for electricity—driven in part by the rise of electric vehicles—companies like TenneT and Enexis are rapidly expanding their infrastructure.

This means a stronger network capable of supplying households and businesses with sufficient energy. However, this expansion comes with challenges: transformer stations, where overhead power lines transition underground, generate significant heat.

Fire test

To cool transformers, oil is used. But what happens if that oil overheats and catches fire? This is where Staco steps in. The company develops metal panels specifically designed to be placed under and around transformers. These panels have a critical role: if a fire breaks out, they ensure the flames are extinguished within seconds. A simple yet highly effective solution.

The test is coming

Staco’s panels will soon undergo rigorous testing to assess their flame-retardant properties. This crucial step involves multiple parties to ensure the test is conducted carefully and safely. The municipality provides the necessary permits, while EMS Born oversees compliance with all safety measures. EFFS manages the project within the safety zone, and Efectis, as an independent entity, will document and validate the results. For video documentation, Moviefactory has been enlisted, ensuring that everyone can soon watch the footage.

Why is this important?

Transformer stations are a vital part of our energy network. A fire in a transformer can not only pose safety risks but also lead to power outages and costly repairs. Staco’s panels offer an effective solution to minimize this risk. Additionally, they help grid operators expand their infrastructure safely.

What can we expect?

The results and footage of the tests will soon be shared. This promises to be an exciting demonstration of how steel—normally not associated with fire—can play a pivotal role in extinguishing burning oil.
